The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
