RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

In December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
