The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
